PROGRAM SUMMARY

 

Funded through the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), the CPC Beacon Community Center at John J. Pershing I.S. 220 serves youth, adults and families in the Sunset Park neighborhood. The center’s goal is to deliver a multitude of services for local community members by creating an inclusive atmosphere that promotes cultural awareness, active engagement, leadership, and advocacy skills acquisition and empowers individuals to ultimately become self-sufficient.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Foster an inclusive and motivating environment where Beacon participants feel inspired to engage.
  • Build supportive relationships with participants, providing guidance to help them succeed.
  • Develop and lead diverse after-school and evening activities tailored to the needs of youth and young adults.
  • Recruit, train, and equip high school volunteers to be effective leaders.
  • Ensure participants complete program components, tracking progress and celebrating achievements.
  • Assist with organizing orientations, workshops, and reflection sessions to enhance youth skills.
  • Serve as a liaison between students and external organizations bringing resources to our students.
  • Manage administrative tasks, including participant enrollment and attendance.
  • Attending required program meetings and trainings with funders and other stakeholders.
  • Plan and coordinate offsite trips focused on various subjects such as STEM, Social-Emotional Learning, Visual Arts, and college readiness.
  • Support the program with additional tasks as needed.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education and Experience:

  • One of the following:
    • Bachelor's degree preferred in related field.
    • Associate degree with 2 years of experience in the social services sector (working with middle and high school youth in after-school or community-based settings, or experience working with the Department of Education).
    • Current college student with 3 years of experience in the social services sector (working with middle and high school youth in after-school or community-based settings, or experience working with the Department of Education) will be considered.

 

Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability to recruit, train, and guide volunteers and students.
  • Strong verbal and written communication to engage students, parents, and the larger community.
  • Culturally competent professional dedicated to delivering services with sensitivity to participants’ cultural heritage, traditions, life experiences, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) interpersonal, time management, and decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications and virtual platforms such as Zoom, Teams, and Webex.
  • Fluency in English and proficiency in Chinese, Spanish, and/or Russian.

 

Additional Requirements:

  • Hiring for this position is subject to clearance by the NYC Department of Education and required background checks

 

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS OVERVIEW

 

  • $22.00 - $27.00 per hour; 25 hours per week with occasional evenings and weekends as needed
  • CPC offers eligible temporary staff members mandatory benefits, including paid New York State sick time
