Public Health Nurse
Health care facilities in California are licensed, regulated, inspected, and/or certified by a number of public and private agencies at the state and federal levels, including the CDPH Center for Health Care Quality (CHCQ) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). CHCQ is responsible for ensuring health care facilities comply with state laws and regulations. In addition, CHCQ cooperates with CMS to ensure that facilities accepting Medicare and Medi-Cal (in California, Medicaid is referred to as Medi-Cal) payments meet federal requirements. CHCQ also oversees the certification of nurse assistants, home health aides, hemodialysis technicians, and the licensing of nursing home administrators.

This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by investigating and providing consultation on outbreaks and investigations of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), serving as an HAI Program public health nurse subject matter expert, and developing and delivering infection prevention and control training and education programs. This role interacts with hospital administrators, medical and nursing directors, quality improvement managers, physician epidemiologists, infection prevention staff, and local public health agencies, and works either independently or under the direction of the HAI Program medical officers. It may involve traveling onsite to hospitals and other health care facilities to perform detailed assessments, identify gaps in clinical practices that may lead to high rates of HAI, and offer suggestions for improvement.
Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
- Previous experience work as a Public Health Nurse in a state or local health department.
- Previous experience in communicable disease control and/or healthcare-associated infections.
- Master's in Public Health.
