Health Equity Coordinator

Salary Range: $48,478-$72,717

Job Description

Position Summary:
This position will develop Canton City Public Health’s organizational goals and objectives to address, reduce, and eliminate racial health disparities and inequities. They will coordinate organizational changes in policies, procedures, and programs across the department to maximize equity and inclusion. The Health Equity Coordinator (HEC) will develop and monitor an action plan to normalize organizational change that advances racial equity in alignment with the Government Alliance on Race and Equity (GARE) 7 standards and others as identified. They will serve as a resource and content expert for the department and as a trusted resource for the community on matters of racial and health equity. The HEC will participate on interdisciplinary department and community work groups, and coordinate and monitor department initiatives relative to racial and health equity. This position is under the general supervision of the Director of Health Promotion and Planning. They work closely with the THRIVE Project Director to complete the Ohio Equity Initiative (OEI) grant deliverables and submit required reporting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
 

  • Using the Bay Area Regional Health Inequities Initiative, Local Health Department Organizational Self-Assessment for Addressing Health Inequities: Toolkit and Guide to Implementation, conduct an annual organizational equity self-assessment of Canton City Public Health (CCPH) to identify information for reflection, discussion, planning, and organizational development.
  • Research and remain up to date on best practices in equity and inclusion for workplaces and public health services to facilitate continuous organizational improvement.
  • Review and revise internal policies, procedures, and practices through an equity lens in collaboration with the leadership team.
  • Organize staff training in topics and skills related to diversity, equity, health equity, inclusion, belonging, social determinants of health, and/or cultural competence and humility with the goal of improving staff capacity to work with and serve diverse and changing populations.
  • Stimulate internal dialogues about how Canton City Public Health can build its capacity to address health inequities and foster an internal culture of inclusion and belonging.
  • Be an active member of the leadership team, attend monthly leadership team meetings, and act as a resource for the senior leadership team.
  • Chair the Commitment to Ongoing Racial Equity (CORE) Team—Canton City Public Health’s interdisciplinary, inter-divisional committee for developing, implementing, and evaluating progress of CCPH’s internal equity goals. CORE Team is responsible for CCPH’s Racial Equity Action Plan (REAP). Maintain a CORE Team charter and Racial Equity Guiding Statement.
  • Coordinate the updating, promotion, and implementation of CCPH’s Racial Equity Action Plan using information gathered from organizational equity self-assessments, best practices research, and input from community and staff.
  • Participate as an active member in strategic planning, program planning, reaccreditation committee, workforce development committee (including All-Staff Meeting planning), and other organizational development activities.
  • Collaborate with members of the THRIVE division to implement the THRIVE strategic plan and complete Ohio Equity Initiative grant deliverables as required. Track ongoing progress of grant and program deliverables, submit timely and complete monthly and quarterly progress reports and data to THRIVE Program Director.
  • Engage with executive officials of community and government agencies to cultivate mutually beneficial partnerships that promote health equity in Canton and Stark County.
  • Participate in reviewing, revising, and developing job descriptions, focusing on maximizing equity and inclusion and minimizing potential barriers to applicants (as assigned to the ad hoc position description review group).
  • Collect and analyze data from staff and community to document, measure, and assess Canton City Public Health’s progress towards identified goals relative to health equity.
  • Serve people from different identities, abilities, geographic, racial, religious, and cultural backgrounds using strong cultural competency skills.
  • Cultivate and develop new racial equity leadership in the department, especially among the CORE Team.
  • Maintain knowledge of health equity in public health trends.
  • Engage with and serve as a resource to individuals, organizations, and the community for matters related to health equity.
  • Maintain effective communication with Ohio Department of Children and Youth’s Ohio Equity Initiative staff and attend required training and meetings.
  • Contribute to periodic assessments of community health status and factors influencing health equity in Stark County.
  • Serve as Canton City Public Health’s health equity ambassador to promote CCPH’s brand to partners, stakeholders, and at community events.
  • Develop and conduct in?person and online presentations for diverse audiences. Actively identify audiences and community events in which CCPH should participate. Share information with CCPH leadership and CCPH Community Engagement Specialist to support strong representation of CCPH services at events.
  • Contribute to the development of a shared vision for a healthy community with focus on health equity and inclusion.
  • Approach all projects through a health equity lens.
  • Provide support functions in response to public health emergencies as directed by the Health Commissioner.


Minimum Qualifications:
 

  • A Bachelor’s degree in psychology, Sociology, Public Policy, African American or Other Cultural Studies, Community Health, Public Health, or related field.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in a community-based organization, local public health department, Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, or related organization.
  • Experience in data analysis and management and/or program coordination and evaluation.
  • Experience communicating emotionally challenging information and data to diverse audiences, both orally and in writing.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to interpret and apply Federal and State regulations, procedures, policies into all aspects of the work.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and provide culturally competent service.
  • Ability to hold a flexible schedule; hours will include evenings and weekends.

Minimum Credentials:
 

The following must be acquired and maintained. These credentials are not required upon initial hire but must be acquired after hiring within 6 months .

 

Certification in National Incident Management System (NIMS) Incident Command Systems (ICS) levels 100, 200, 700, 800. (provided by employer)

Work Environment:
This position works 70% in a climate?controlled office to prepare program materials; 30% traveling throughout the community. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods of time. Requires frequent meetings with department personnel, stakeholders and members of the community.  Meetings will often occur outside of the department throughout the city and county. Requires occasional travel outside of the area and overnight for training, meetings and conferences. City vehicle can be provided for work activities/work travel with supervisor approval.   This position requires frequent adjustments to a typical work schedule to accommodate the needs of the community (nights and weekends).

RATING
Your name will be placed on a list of eligible candidates upon receiving a passing score. Once the list has been established, your name will remain on the list for a period of one (1) year.  
 

REPEATING AN EXAM

Per OAC Rule 123: 1-9-01, an applicant who has competed in a civil service examination cannot repeat that examination or take an examination for the same classification within FOUR MONTHS from the date of original examination, unless an alternative form of examination is given, or unless other standards are specified in the examination announcement.
