POSITION DESCRIPTION

Title:            Masonry Teacher

Reports To: Principal/Designee

FSLA:          Exempt

 

Position Summary

The Masonry Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality instruction in masonry and related construction trades to high school students. The teacher prepares students for employment, apprenticeships, industry certifications, and postsecondary opportunities by delivering instruction aligned with Virginia Career and Technical Education standards and industry best practices.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned 

  1. Plan and deliver instruction aligned with Virginia CTE standards and division curriculum.
  2. Teach foundational and advanced masonry skills, including:
    1. Brick and block laying
    2. Mortar mixing and application
    3. Stone masonry
    4. Concrete work and finishing
    5. Blueprint reading
    6. Construction mathematics
    7. Estimating materials and costs
    8. Safety procedures and OSHA regulations
  3. Integrate employability skills, teamwork, communication, and professionalism into instruction.
  4. Utilize hands-on learning experiences and project-based instruction.
  5. Maintain a safe and organized classroom and masonry laboratory/shop environment.
  6. Enforce safety procedures and proper use of tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  7. Inspect and maintain tools, equipment, and instructional materials.
  8. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations.
  9. Assess student progress using a variety of evaluation methods.
  10. Prepare students for industry certifications and credentialing opportunities.
  11. Assist students in exploring careers in construction and skilled trades.
  12. Promote participation in career and technical student organizations and competitions.
  13. Develop and maintain partnerships with local contractors, businesses, apprenticeship programs, and community organizations.
  14. Coordinate work-based learning opportunities, internships, and job-shadowing experiences when appropriate.
  15. Participate in advisory committee meetings and industry engagement activities.
  16. Maintain professional competence through professional development and industry training.
  17. Participate in faculty meetings, division training, and school activities.
  18. Maintain accurate records and required reports.

Communicate effectively with students, parents, administrators, and community partners.

 

Education and Certification 

  1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and industry experience.
  2. Eligibility for or possession of a valid Virginia teaching license with the appropriate Career and Technical Education endorsement.
  3. Extensive experience in masonry, bricklaying, stonework, concrete finishing, or related construction trades.

Knowledge of industry safety standards and practices.

 

Preferred

  1. Journeyman or Master Mason certification.
  2. Experience teaching or training youth or adults.

Experience preparing students for industry-recognized credentials.

  1. Thorough knowledge of masonry techniques, materials, and equipment.
  2. Knowledge of construction safety practices and OSHA standards.
  3. Ability to teach technical skills to diverse learners.
  4. Strong classroom and laboratory management skills.
  5. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  6. Ability to establish positive relationships with students and industry partners.

Ability to motivate students and promote career readiness.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and demonstrate masonry techniques for extended periods. Ability to lift and move materials and equipment consistent with the demands of the position. Ability to work in indoor and outdoor instructional environments.  Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop and kneel.  Lifting and/or moving up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or moving up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Ten-month employment. Salary Range $55,000 to $85,250.

EVALUATION

Performance of the position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Prince Edward County School Board's policy on evaluation of professional personnel.
