Visual Impairment Teacher

POSITION SUMMARY Under the direction of the Associate Superintendent, Special Schools and Services, the VI teacher provides instruction and related services for visually impaired children in their homes, local schools and within the community. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS ● Know and understand the objectives of the Siskiyou County Office of Education, its activities and evaluation process ● Secure needed compliance forms and medical data on assigned students ● Assess students’ needs using pre- and post-tests related to Visually Impaired ● Confer with parents and professionals to meet student needs ● Participate in multidisciplinary teams and individual educational plans in conjunction with educational team members ● Establish, maintain and update schedules of visits to schools and homes ● Instruct students using prescriptive programs either directly or through consultation with paraprofessionals, professionals and parents ● Instruct students in compensatory skill areas unique to vision loss (i.e., braille reading and writing, and use of assistive technology, orientation mobility as relevant) ● Demonstrate ability to utilize behavior management in shaping appropriate personal and social behaviors ● Communicate and consult with professionals and parents of visually impaired students ● Order special supplies and equipment, maintain accurate records and return borrowed materials at the end of the school year ● Attend staff meetings and other scheduled in-service meetings QUALIFICATIONS ● Possession of a valid California Credential authorizing service as a Visual Impaired Specialist, or ability to obtain an authorizing California credential ● Ability to maintain a good professional relationship with other professional staff and members of the community ● Possession of a valid California Driver’s License

BENEFITS: The Siskiyou County Office of Education contributes $1,300 monthly toward Health and Welfare benefits, a membership to Cal-Ore Life Flight, and a $10,000 Life Insurance policy during the term of employment.
