POSITION SUMMARY
Under medical/nursing supervision, assist providers and nursing staff in the delivery of high quality health care. The primary function of the Medical Assistant is to support the providers with a variety of clinical and administrative tasks during the clinical day.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES (Listed in descending order of importance)

Communication/Interpersonal:
- Acts as a patient/family advocate.
- Communicates patient’s health status accurately in verbal and written reports to appropriate health care providers (i.e. nurse supervisor, providers).
- Communicates effectively, courteously and collaboratively with patient/family, providers, supervisors and co-workers.
- Maintains patient confidentiality.
Clinical Care Duties:
- Assist providers with patient care such as examinations, procedures and treatments in a professional manner.
- Prepare patients for examinations, procedures and treatments. Obtain vital signs, measure height and weight; perform vision and auditory screening as needed; record all information in EHR.
- Obtain medical history, history of present illness and/or chief complaint and record in EHR.
- Obtain information related to chronic disease(s) and document in appropriate disease management templates.
- Participate in management of chronic disease registries and recall of patients for recommended care.
- Conduct tests and procedures as directed, including ECG’s, spirometry, and retinal photographs.
- Adhere to established patient screening procedures.
- Administer and properly record immunizations following the provider’s orders, using the appropriate procedures.
- Sterilize instruments and suture sets.
- Inventory and order supplies, stock exam rooms.
- Assist with scheduling for specialty care referrals or ancillary testing.
- Draw blood, collect specimens and perform on-site laboratory procedures.
- Process specimens to be sent to outside laboratory.
- Perform other laboratory duties as assigned by the Nurse Supervisor.
- Recognize and respond to emergencies.
- Obtain/maintain CPR certification.

Referral Duties:
- Ensure that the appropriate internal/external providers, facilities and ancillary services are utilized in the referral process.
- Document all referrals in EMR.
- Print and mail/fax referrals/authorizations to providers and facilities at the time the provider is contacted.
- Answer phones and maintain documentation, and files as needed.
- Process external referrals according to grants, including Komen, WWC, CCSP.
- Knowledgeable about available grant programs and services covered.
Safety/Risk Management:
- Adheres to health center safety, infection control and hazardous waste procedures.
- Maintains patient confidentiality at all times in accordance with HIPAA regulations.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Medical Assistant 1:
- One year of CNA or Medical office experience is preferred but not required.
- Must possess current valid CPR and/or BLS certification.
Medical Assistant 2:
- One year of Medical Assistant experience is required.
- Must possess current valid CPR and/or BLS certification.
- Must pass all competencies as outlined by the Medical Department.
- Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire or promotion.
Medical Assistant 3:
- Must possess current valid CPR and/or BLS certification.
- Successful completion of an accredited CCMA(Certified Clinical Medical Assistant) and obtaining certifications.
- Applicants MUST attach a copy of their Medical Assistant certificate to their application materials no later than the closing date listed in the announcement.
- Must pass all competencies as outlined by the Medical Department.
- Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire or promotion.
Education or Formal Training & Experience
- Completion of an accredited course in medical assisting (Certified Medical Assistant) is preferred but not required.
- Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
- Current BLS Certification. Employer will provide if needed.
- Bilingual- Spanish and English speaking, writing, and reading required.
Requirements
- Must pass a criminal background check.
- Annual Flu vaccine required. Employer will provide.
- Obtain 2 step-PPD for tuberculosis . Employer will provide.
- Obtain vaccine records for MMR, Varicella, T-DaP, and Hep B. Employer will provide.
Knowledge, Skill & Ability: (include materials and equipment directly used)
- Requires a comprehensive knowledge of medical assistant techniques and procedures for all phases of medical care.
- Knowledge of modern medical materials, their storage, handling, and application is required.
- The Medical Assistant must be cognizant of the expectations and concerns of the center’s patients and be able to respond in an empathetic and professional manner.
- The ability to work with people from a wide diversity of social, ethnic, and economic backgrounds is necessary.
- The Medical Assistant must be able to creatively work with other health care professionals from a variety of disciplines to achieve maximal results for the center’s patients from a system of integrated primary health care.
- Ability to understand and present verbal instructions and to exchange verbal information is essential.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective, courteous working relationships with patients and others.
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks.
- Ability to work in a Windows-based computer environment.
Physical Requirements and Workplace Environment:
- Requires long periods of standing.
- Requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 35 pounds.
- Requires ability to use routine office equipment such as computers and telephone.
- Requires the ability to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and reach.
- Requires sufficient near vision to be able to read documents and computer screens.
- Requires ability to comprehend both oral and written communications.
