Outreach Specialist

Job Summary / Overview 

The primary responsibility of the Outreach Specialist is to build and maintain trusted relationships with veterans, their family members, and caregivers across the community. The Outreach Specialist actively seeks out and engages veterans where they live, work, and gather to promote awareness of Alaska's Warrior Partnership and educate potential clients of guaranteed benefits and available resources. The Outreach Specialist is also responsible for creating and sustaining a community-based Advisory Council to guide outreach, coordinate local events, and support fundraising and awareness initiatives. The Outreach Specialist directly drives AKWP’s organizational reach and community impact. Success in this role is specifically measured by the increase in the number of veterans known, connected, and supported within the community. 

Key Success Indicators: 

Facilitate recruitment and onboarding of at least 5 qualified Advisory Council members  who contribute toward outreach and fundraising efforts. 

Maintain engagement and conduct a minimum of quarterly advisory council meetings to support outreach and community involvement. 

Identify, engage and document 125 veterans per quarter. 

Generate and document qualified digital engagements that lead to at least 25% of the 125 quarterly outreach connections through consistent online interaction, follow-up, and referral to the Veteran Support Specialist. 

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities 

Proactively and consistently identify and engage veterans and their families in the community through direct outreach, local events, and trusted networks. 

Build and maintain authentic relationships with veterans to gain a better understanding of the veteran community and their needs. 

Serve as a consistent, reliable point of contact for veterans, ensuring they feel seen, heard, and supported. 

Perform other related duties as assigned, supporting maintaining a relationship with clients, corporations, and partners. 

 

Advisory Committee Development 

Recruit, develop, and maintain a local advisory committee of veterans, corporations and partners to guide outreach efforts. 

Engage the committee to support fundraising and outreach strategies that strengthen connections with veterans. 

Facilitate regular meetings and ensure that all advisory members are informed, empowered, and active contributors to the organization’s mission. 

Community Engagement & Events 

Coordinate and participate in community events designed to bring veterans together, raise awareness, and foster essential connections. 

Represent AKWP at local gatherings, meetings, and veteran-focused activities to actively expand the network of support. 

Collaborate strategically with community groups, nonprofits, and agencies to ensure veterans are connected across multiple support systems. 

Data Tracking & Reporting 

Maintain accurate and up to date records of new leads, contacts, veteran engagement, outreach efforts, collaborating organizations, and advisory committee activities in WarriorServe®. 

Track outcomes to measure overall impact 

Create and present regular progress reports to leadership. 

Utilize data insights to refine outreach strategies, ensuring continuous improvement in how the organization engages and supports veterans. 

 

Qualifications 

Education: Bachelor’s of Science, Public Relations, Communications, Business, or related field. Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. 

 

Experience

At least 2-3 years of experience in community engagement, partnership development, or a related field. 

Experience working with veterans, military families, or nonprofit organizations is highly preferred. 

Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders. 

 

Skills & Abilities: 

Strong relationship-building and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with diverse veteran populations. 

Experience in outreach, community organizing, or engagement preferred. 

Comfortable with public speaking, professional networking, and grassroots community engagement. 

Ability to work independently, effectively manage multiple priorities, and follow through on commitments. 

Military experience or deep familiarity with the veteran community strongly preferred. 

 

Technical Proficiency

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). 

Experience with CRM systems or database management is a plus. 

Work Environment: 

The role is based in Virginia and will require travel for events throughout {Insert location here}. 

Some evening and weekend work may be required to accommodate partner schedules and events.
