🧠 About the Role

The Wastewater Control Inspector (6115) supports the SFPUC Wastewater Enterprise (WWE), which operates and maintains San Francisco’s combined sewer system — protecting public health and the environment.

You’ll inspect and monitor wastewater and stormwater dischargers across the city to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations. This includes working with industrial facilities, restaurants, construction sites, and green infrastructure projects to prevent pollution and safeguard San Francisco’s waterways.

This recruitment may fill multiple positions in two divisions:

Collection System Division – focuses on pretreatment and pollution prevention

Urban Watershed Planning Division – focuses on stormwater and green infrastructure


⚙️ What You’ll Do

Inspect wastewater, stormwater, and groundwater dischargers for compliance with environmental regulations

Conduct site visits, collect samples, and document inspection findings

Investigate illegal discharges, odors, and environmental complaints

Prepare reports, permits, and enforcement documentation

Support stormwater management programs and green infrastructure inspections

Collaborate with engineers, scientists, contractors, and the public to promote pollution prevention and environmental compliance


🎓 Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, engineering, chemistry, or related field

Experience: At least 1 year in wastewater treatment, water quality, stormwater, or pollution prevention work

Certification:

California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Environmental Compliance Inspector Grade I (or ability to obtain within one year of hire)

License: Valid California driver’s license

💡 Additional experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis (up to 2 years).

⭐ Desirable Qualifications

Knowledge of NPDES/MS4 permits, pretreatment programs, or stormwater management

Experience in inspection and enforcement

Certifications such as QSP/QSD or National Green Infrastructure Certification (NGICP)

Background in pollution prevention, laboratory analysis, or chemistry
